Why can't domestic barcodes be scanned abroad?
Our company recently received such an order. Our first batch of samples was sent to the customer, and all samples passed (a total of 10 samples). The customer feedback was very positive, so we began bulk production, totaling 10,000 samples. Because shipping times abroad are generally slow. Once all the bulk goods were shipped, the problem arose. Customers reported that out of 10,000 cards, only about 20% can be scanned by supermarket desktop machines; most cards cannot be scanned, resulting in all barcode cards sold by customers having to be collected, causing significant losses and impacts!
After the customer reported this situation, we immediately conducted testing. The tests showed that the scanning was good, with no issues of scan failure. Later, based on technical analysis, we mainly analyzed the following technical aspects

1. Whether the customer can identify the barcode type
The barcode we use is the customer-specified 39 barcode. Testing the 39 barcode on our side is flawless. We even photographed the finished product and then printed it on A4 paper for scanning, and the results were always excellent! First, the issue of the 39 barcode being unrecognized by customers can be resolved, since all previous samples have passed.

2. Whether the barcode needs to be marked with an "*"
Regarding the issue of adding an "*" sign, 39 codes generally require an "*" sign, but the reason a batch of cards previously issued by the customer was unusable was because they had "*" added. In other words, the customer insisted that "*" must not be added, otherwise scanning would be impossible. Therefore, our barcode also did not have an "*" sign, which can be ruled out.

3. Barcode clarity issues
The barcode clarity was designed to be 300 DPI, which is quite clear. However, the customer seems to be using a high-end foreign scanner with high clarity requirements. During the design, you might consider setting the DPI higher, but we didn't test this during actual production.

4. Issues with the scanner gun
The scanner may also be a factor, since we use domestic scanners. Domestic scanners may be very efficient for recognizing our own barcodes, while foreign ones may not have as high recognition rates, so this is also worth considering.

Currently, the actual issue with this batch of goods has not been resolved. We are still researching it, and once this issue is resolved, I will supplement this article.
