Not every city issues bus IC cards, but with the continuous advancement of information technology, many cities have begun to promote bus IC cards. For example, in Xinyang City, Henan, some areas implemented the system in 2013, and this year it has been fully rolled out citywide. In fact, there are many advantages to bus IC cards. Let's take a look below.
Compared to manual ticketing and active coin insertion on public transit, bus IC cards have many advantages, such as:
First, cost savings. Many major city bus systems have long been driverless for ticket sales, but currently, most buses in our city have attendants who exchange change. These attendants usually work half-day shifts in two shifts, earning about 2,000 yuan a month. The price for a complete bus IC card system is over 2,000 yuan, equivalent to a crew member's monthly salary. By this calculation, installing an IC card system on every bus truly enables unmanned ticket sales, saving installation costs in just one month.
Second, convenience. Currently, all buses in our city are equipped with coin lockers, and most citizens carry coins when riding, which is not very convenient to carry. Sometimes, some citizens don't even bring change. On buses with attendants, citizens can exchange for money from the attendants, but some vehicles do not have attendants, which means some citizens may not be able to take the bus due to lack of change.
Third, safety. When inserting coins, some citizens take money from their wallets, handbags, or pockets, rather than holding it in advance. When taking out money, any thieves on the bus may be alert to the money in citizens' hands, which can easily trigger theft. If you are carrying a bus IC card, you only need to place it next to the card reader without taking it out. This way, thieves cannot see the wallet, handbag, or money in the pocket, reducing the likelihood of theft.
Currently, nearly 2,000 IC cards have been issued for public transport in Xinyang City. However, currently, Xinyang City's bus IC cards do not cover the entire bus system; only five bus routes are usable: Routes 20, 22, 25, 26, and 28. It is believed that in the coming years, it will cover the entire city of Xinyang, making it much more convenient for citizens to travel by bus.
